Safety of children’s sleeping bag

British Standard Association issued a new standard BS 8510:2009 about child-care products in Apr 2009. The standard provides the minimum requirement for the sleeping bags used by children over 4kg. 

This standard is not fit for children’s clothing, including pajamas, infant coat and the warm product on children’s trolley, etc. it is not fit for the leisure sleeping bag, such as camping sleep bag.

Children’s sleeping bag is wholly consisted of weave material. It has neck orifice and cuff, but without gusset, cat and the special design for leg and foot. Such sleeping bag is designed for keeping warm for infant when sleeping on crib. Therefore there is no need of coverlet, quilt or carpet.

The minimum requirement of this standard is as follows

Chemical danger

 Heat conduction danger (max therm)

Entrainment, entanglement, choking, swallow and suffocation risk

Structure integrity

Flammability

The last of flammability could be described as that products should be in accord with EN14878. As such product is not pajama, It is regarded for children over 6 months to comply with “class A” property in EN14878 standard.

Note: According to pajamas safety regulation issued by British Trade and Industry ministry, the clothing used by infant over 3 months, which could be sleeping bag or pajamas, should be regarded as pajamas.  When in test according to BS5722, such product sold in Britain should have flammability. 

In order to avoid the unfit of requirement appears in Britain, we suggest such clothing should fulfill the requirement of low flammability.
